The Torch Doth Not Burn Tonight (Painting) : A Creative Interpretation of Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet Play

The Torch Doth Not Burn Tonight (Painting) : My Creative Interpretation of Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet Play

Title :
"The Torch Doth Not Burn Tonight"

Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, a tragic story about revenge, love and death-a classic love story that’s been told and retold to every generation since first hitting the stage in 1594.In this painting I set the tone of the scene, Juliet’s final moments of life.

Below you’ll find my creative take on Juliet, the final moments before her death. It’s the first painting to my "Shakespeare-A Work of Art " collection.

We can begin with Juliet’s position in this painting-here she unknowingly reads the storybook “Romeo and Juliet” and learns of her fate and with this she resolves to take her own life “Then I’ll be brief. O happy dagger, This is thy sheath. There rust and let me die.” The book -a symbol of her reality was added reinforcing that this story is her story and Juliet continues to read discovering her tragic destiny. She shows the beginnings of increasing self-possession and confidence that ultimately lead her to seek her own fate rather than a destiny imposed upon her by her parents or what seems to be.

Moving along the painting you can find other symbols representing the tragic aftermath of Juliet’s dying moment. The withered roses left on the side were once buoyant in vibrant colour and unconscious love, are now left on the ground lifeless-a sign of mourning. Juliet compared Romeo to a rose and that if a rose were given another name; it would still be a rose in its essence.

Candles were added to represent energy and light but not for long. These are the same candles that symbolized elemental magic-a source of creation and the burnt out candles now show that Juliet has passed on to the spirit realm.A cross bar was placed next to Juliet, showing her character as having a life of her own just as Shakespeare had intended. In this painting Juliet is portrayed as Shakespeare’s marionette, she’s become a visual metaphor for his ideas and she exists as an independent soul. Shakespeare never sidelined his female characters even in a time when women were not allowed to perform on stage.

Romeo and Juliet a universal piece of work-his exploration of the human condition makes his works timeless and I’ve added a time machine to the painting to symbolize this matter. This machine is a hypothetical symbolic device permitting Shakespeare’s characters and stories to travel into the future.Candles were added to represent energy and light but not for long. Shakespeare a work of art (in progress)

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend! A sprinkle of Swarovski crystals and gold leaf ice add a touch of luxury to this oil painting "The Torch doth not burn tonight". Now, that’s a true definition of fine art being at its finest.

•Luxury-Power-Beauty•

It was a long process in creating this beauty-Juliet. Romeo would be proud of her.

This was the process.

"The Torch doth not burn Tonight" (as shown in this blog) is the name of the painting that I first decided to create to start off the production of my first grand collection (entirely based off of Shakespeare's plays). It is a scene from his play "Romeo and Juliet".XL

Every painting that I create is completely conceptualized and starts with a sketch to establish the ideas, composition and values of the scene.

This can be a long process and requires time and focus.Take a look at the sketch (displayed above) that was created to help evolve this painting.

To view the painting in it's early stage, view my other blog post about the imprimatura/underpainting stage here.

Displayed below are the types of oil paint colour mixtures that were used for the process of creating the roses in the painting. Many paint colour mixtures were created with the intention of achieving a vast array of permutations that could be used for painting. Typically only 50% of the paint mixed is actually used for the painting. I often over-mix paint and use larger quantities of paint to save time. This type of process prevents the disruption of of work flow because you aren't constantly stalling and re-mixing any favorable colours repetitively.Your time is much more valuable than paint. Utilize an excess amount of paint if needed just to get the right colour. Experiment:)

Rublev and Old Holland oil paints are always used for my paintings. Also, a myriad of mediums were mixed with the paint to achieve various levels of consistencies of the paint.XL
Rublev and Old Holland, Van Gogh,Gamblin Artist's Oil Colors and Vasari Classic Artist Oil Colors oil paints are always used for my paintings.Paint quality is paramount to me and anything below professional high quality grade paint pigments (student quality oil paints or even acrylic paint) lack the luster and richness that is required when creating fine art. Also, a myriad of mediums were mixed with the paint to achieve various levels of consistencies of the paint.

These are the only colours I purchase which are initially required to mix into a huge range of colour variations. Of course, the colours displayed in the picture above do not have to be purchased, you could limit your initial palette to only the primary colours (blue, yellow, red). There is no absolute list of colors– it’s all about personal preference. Any of the primaries – red (Quinacridone Red), yellow (Cadmium Yellow), blue (Ultramarine blue), along with white can be mixed to form just about any color. Also, color selection will depend on what you want to paint.
Displayed are also the tools/brushes that were used during the process.XL

Winsor & Newton Series 7 Finest Sable brushes are an investment. They last you much more longer than synthetic brushes. In the long run, you end up saving more and paying less visits to the art store. Quality over quantity.XL

Oil paint on canvas. Swarovski crystals. One more layer of glaze/touch up, and then she will get animated!
